Nightwish (Carsten Leopold)

NIGHTWISH is a Finnish symphonic / power metal band, formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee, Finland. Although the band has been prominent in their home country since the release of their first single, 'The Carpenter' (1997) and debut album 'Angels Fall First', they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums 'Oceanborn' and 'Wishmaster', which were released in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Their 2004 album 'Once' led to NIGHTWISH video clips being shown on MTV in the United States and inclusion of their music in U.S. movie soundtracks.

After the recording of the live DVD 'End of an Era' in Helsinki on 21st October 2005, the four other members of NIGHTWISH decided that it was best to continue NIGHTWISH without Tarja Turunen, a feeling they expressed through an open letter which was given to Turunen by Tuomas Holopainen after the concert, and afterwards posted on the band's website. In May 2007, Anette Olzon was revealed as Tarja Turunen's replacement, and in the autumn 2007, the band released a new album 'Dark Passion Play' for which the band is currently still touring. Current members are Anette Olzon (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards, vocals), Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (lead guitar), Marko "Marco" Hietala (bass, vocals) and Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen (drums). http://www.nightwish.com / http://www.myspace.com/nightwish

Music & Performance
Saturday night, 10:45 pm, the daylight was gone and the stage was ready for the headliner of the day. During the long intro the members of NIGHTWISH entered the stage and started their show with ‘7 Days to the Wolves’. The pleasing light show was perfected by a lot of pyrotechnical effects and the atmosphere in the venue was great. The sound was great too and the rousing show bewitched the crowd. The set list consisted of ten songs from different periods of band history. Unfortunately the concert experience was disturbed by a heavy technical problem: after about 40 minutes, during the song. ‘The Poet and the Pendulum’, the PA was broken down, the crowd couldn't hear any tune anymore and only the monitor sound on stage worked. First the band didn't realize the problem and went on with their show, one song later they realized it, took a break and left the stage.

The crowd was waiting patiently about ten minutes (I think they had to reboot the whole sound system) before the band came back on to stage and went on with the show with ‘Nemo’. Just when the crowd was warmed up again, the main set finished with ‘Dark Chest of Wonder’ and NIGHTWISH left the stage again. But only for very short because of course the crowd requested an encore and they came back to perform only one more song (maybe it was due to the lack of time?) and finished finally after it. Altogether a great show, but due the technical problems the good temper was destroyed a little bit.
